Who is Harry Potter?
If you find yourself asking 'Who is Harry Potter?', most people will probably think that you are joking, unless you have not been in touch with modern day media for quite some time. Harry Potter has become somewhat of a cult phenomenon since the very first book was printed in 1997. The boy wizard is the main character in a series of seven novels by British author J.K. Rowling.
Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger all attend Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which is a boarding school for young wizards and witches. The story focuses on Harry's battle against the evil Lord Voldemort, who is fighting to take over the wizarding world.
Lord Voldemort killed Harry's parents, Lily and James, when Harry was an infant. However, when Voldemort tried to kill the infant Harry, the curse backfired, destroying Voldemort's body and leaving only his spirit to survive. The young Harry Potter is left with a lightning bolt shaped scar on his forehead and becomes famous in the wizarding world for being the only person to ever have survived a killing curse.
For eleven years, even Harry Potter himself does not know who he is, because his non-magical relatives, Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon (the Dursleys), have kept him in the dark about about his wizarding heritage. They despise the young Harry and have forced him to sleep in a cupboard under the stairs virtually his entire life, and punish him for any strange occurrences.
As Harry Potter nears him eleventh birthday, he begins to receive letters from Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. However, his Uncle Vernon keeps the letters from Harry, still trying to keep Harry's magical background from him. Try as they might to keep Harry from his future, the gamekeeper from Hogwarts, Hagrid, visits Harry on his eleventh birthday, revealing Harry's past to him.
Who is Harry Potter? Harry Potter is the legendary boy wizard who has captured the hearts of millions of readers around the world.
